About Us

pic1 Founded April 13, 1983, the Charles (Dolo) Coker Scholarship Foundation Inc., is a non-profit foundation that assists full-time high school and college students between the ages of 15 and 25 who are pursuing careers in music in the field of Jazz. The Foundation was created as a tribute to jazz pianist, arranger, composer, Zanadu recording artist, and teacher Dolo Coker, who succumbed to cancer on that date. Name any established jazz practitioner who delighted audiences from the 50′s through the top of the 80′s and it is a virtual certainty that Dolo performed with them in most of the top jazz spots in the U.S., Europe, West and North Africe, the Far East, Canada, the Bahamas, and the West Indies.Dolo, also a master teacher, loved young people and in his lifetime taught them, counseled them, and did all he could to encourage them. It was his dream to participate in the musical training and development of youth through the granting of scholarships, and to perpetuate jazz, America’s only indigenous art form.
